Paraphrasing Julius Casar, Larry David characterised his Curb Your Enthusiasm hiatus thus: "I left, I did nothing, I returned", and thank god he did come back, as the world has never been so ripe for having its bullshit called out.

Curb season 9, coming more than six years after season 8, begins on Sunday 1 October.

How to watch

In the US, episodes will air weekly on HBO at 10pm.

In the UK, Sky Atlantic will carry the new season, but there are no plans for a simulcast, meaning you'll need to wait until Monday 2 October at 10pm

List of episodes

1. Foisted!

2. The Pickle Gambit

3. A Disturbance in the Kitchen

4. Running with the Bulls

5. Thank You for Your Service

6. The Accidental Text on Purpose

7. Namaste

8. The Tribunal

Who will feature

In addition to David, Jeff Garlin, Cheryl Hines, Susie Essman, J.B. Smoove, Bob Einstein, Richard Lewis, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen will all return.

There is also an extensive list of cameos: Bryan Cranston, Lauren Graham, Jimmy Kimmel, Nick Offerman, Elizabeth Banks, Ed Begley Jr., Carrie Brownstein, Nasim Pedrad, Elizabeth Perkins, June Diane Raphael, Casey Wilson, Andrea Savage, Damon Wayans Jr., Steven Weber, Katie Aselton and Judge Judy Sheindlin.

What do we know about the events of the season?

Episode 1, 'Foisted!', has the following synopsis: 'Larry tries to rid himself of an inept assistant, offends Jeff's barber and gets into hot water over a new project.'

Summaries for later episodes have yet to be listed, but the season trailer teases the following annoyances for Larry, ranging, as ever, from the genuinely mortifying to the incredible trivial:

- Not being able to open the pump on a new soap dispenser

- A shoelace snapping

- An appearance in court

- Someone crying too loudly at a funeral

- His secretary taking time off for constipation

- Being sprayed by a perfume saleswoman

- Therapy (with Bryan Cranston playing the therapist!)

- PDA
