We say you pay
Friendly daytime faces Richard & Judy were at the centre of a phone-in scandal after it was revealed that the programme was allowing viewers to call in for 'You Say We Pay' when they had no chance of being selected. In a sample period taken from January-February of 2007, 47% of calls were received after shortlist had been selected, with Channel 4 being fined £150,000 as a result. Those who believed they'd made the £1 call after the time potential winners were selected were encouraged call in, with the profits being donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Richard Madeley said 'I think it is a cock-up, not a conspiracy. We're angry on behalf of our viewers.'
