Dominic Savage's documentary 'Rogue Males' about youngsters in Salford committing crimes, shocked audiences as it involved scenes including people stealing pallets from a builders' yard and cowboy builders which were posed by actors - without informing viewers of any reconstruction.
Viewers are becoming trained cynics in the art of spotting TV fakery, but in 1998 this revelation was a huge scandal and consequently leading Savage away from fact into fiction: 'It was a scary time...It made the front page in the Daily Mirror! I wasn't cynically restaging stuff. What you could accuse me of was naivety. And that was the point where it became so important for me to create drama, because I didn't want to be restricted by that sort of thing.'
