Alec Baldwin: "'At long last Mr President, here is your Emmy"

The 69th Emmy Awards has perhaps unsurprisingly taken a turn for the political with both Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon winning trophies for their Saturday Night Live performances as Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

Baldwin won the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series award at the Los Angeles ceremony, immediately referencing host Stephen Colbert's earlier mention of Trump's past failures to win an Emmy for The Apprentice USA.

The actor quipped: “I suppose I should say, at long last, Mr. President, here is your Emmy,“ to cheers and applause from the crowd.

“I always remember once someone told me that when you die, you don’t remember a bill that Congress passed or a decision the Supreme Court made or an address made by the president - you remember a song, you remember a line from a movie, you remember a play, you remember a book, a painting, a poem,” Baldwin continued, adding: “What we do is important, and for all of you out there in motion pictures and television, don’t stop doing what you’re doing. The audience is counting on you.”

Earlier on in the evening, McKinnon won for her portrayal of Trump's Democratic rival Clinton. Visibly emotional, the Ghostbusters star described her work on Saturday Night Live as “the most meaningful thing I will ever do.”

SNL later went on to win Outstanding Variety Sketch Series.
