Andy Murray’s Wimbledon victory was watched by a peak of 17.3 million viewers, making it the most watched TV moment of 2013.
The British tennis player’s straight-sets win over Novak Djokovic attracted an average of 12.09 million viewers, according to the BBC.
The broadcaster said a five-minute peak audience of 17.29 million people tuned in to watch the end of the third set, when Murray stood to win the championship 6-4, 7-5, 6-4.
The figures exceeded the ratings for the 2012 final, in which Murray lost to Roger Federer, which saw a peak audience of 16.9 million and an average of 11.4 million.
Murray’s win is narrowly the second most watched Wimbledon match of all time, after 17.3 million people watched Bjorn Borg’s five-set victory over John McEnroe in 1980.
But the Murray final has become the most watched TV moment of 2013 so far, beating the Britain’s Got Talent final which saw a peak audience of 13.1 million last month.
The 2013 final ratings also beat the 13.2 million viewers who tuned in to watch Andy Murray’s semi-final with Jerzy Janowicz last week.
UK TV Ratings said the Wimbledon final’s domestic viewing figures peaked higher than all London 2012 Olympic sporting events, with the exception of the 100m final.
