Screen icon Dame Angela Lansbury has said she's 'devastated' over the backlash she faced over her comments on sexual harassment.

In a recent interview with Radio Times, the 92-year-old Murder She Wrote star said that women should “sometimes take [the] blame.” She added that there is no excuse for sexual misconduct.

Lansbury has now issued a statement addressing the reaction to her words, putting simply: “There is no excuse whatsoever for men to harass women in an abusive sexual manner. And, I am devastated that anyone should deem me capable of thinking otherwise.

“Those who have known the quality of my work and the many public statements I have made over the course of my life, must know, that I am a strong supporter of Women’s Rights.”

Lansbury also criticised reports for blaming her age for her words.

"We have to own up to the fact that women, since time immemorial, have gone out of their way to make themselves attractive. And unfortunately it has backfired on us - and this is where we are today.

Lansbury - whose credits include Bedknobs and Broomsticks - will soon take on the role of Aunt March in the BBC's latest television adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic novel, Little Women.
