Netflix has inked a multi-year deal with Mitch Hurwitz for the Arrested Development creator to work on new original series, in an unprecedented step for the streaming service.
The deal comes off the back of the love-in between Netflix and the Arrested Development team that occurred last year, when the company helped bring back the comedy for an ambitious fourth season.
Hurwitz will create and produce new content through his banner The Hurwitz Company, according to Deadline, develop other shows in a non-writing capacity and consult for Netflix on comedy series.
Basically it sounds like they're putting him in charge of their comedy output going forward.
"We are lucky to be in business with Mitch Hurwitz, a true genius with one of the most distinctive voices in comedy today" said Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. "Mitch's inventive approach to Arrested Development — one of the top TV comedies of this generation — was ahead of its time, and we’r e fortunate to have him on our team."
There is no word yet on whether this means we could see more Arrested Development or the long talked-about film spin-off, though there are rumours circulating that this could be on the table.
"It is incredibly inspiring to get to produce for Netflix, a company that not only doesn’t resist change but is leaps and bounds ahead of everyone in forging it," Hurwitz said. "The fact that I’m also getting one month of their streaming right to my TV or Xbox free … well, it really takes the sting out of buying that Xbox."
After the success of House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and more, Netflix is looking to add to its original programming, with multiple new series already in the works including Sense8 and Narcos.Reuse content
