Boy Meets World becomes Girl Meets World: Cory and Topanga return for spin-off about their daughter
Children of the Nineties who witnessed Cory Matthews’ transition from earnest schoolboy to assured student and husband in Boy Meets World will be excited to hear that a sequel featuring the two central actors is in the pipeline.
Girl Meets World, commissioned by the Disney Channel, will switch the focus from Cory (who will be reprised by Ben Savage) to his early teenage daughter, Riley Matthews (Rowan Blanchard), whom he had with wife Topanga, also played by original cast-member Danielle Fishel.
The premise of the new series is similar to the ABC original which aired from 1993 to 2000 and tracked Cory from badly behaved, yet worldly wise, teenager making mischief with his pal Shawn Hunter (Rider Strong), through to young adulthood, university and his marriage to Topanga.
Riley will be a similarly precocious 13-year-old who hangs out with best friend Maya (Sabrina Carpenter). Cory is now a history teacher and Topanga runs a trendy afterschool hangout.
Mr Feeny played by William Daniels is also set to make a return.
“Girl Meets World is a new show for a new generation that will be rooted in the same kind of honest, comedic storytelling about coming of age and the importance of family and friendship that made Boy Meets World so popular,” said Boy Meets World co-creator Ben Jacobs who will act as executive producer on the new show.
The show is slated for broadcast in 2014.
