The bookmakers' odds might have been shortest on Calum Scott to be crowned this year’s Britain’s Got Talent winner but tonight the singer lost out after he forgot the words to his song.

His performance of Rihanna’s “Diamonds” was marred by mistakes after he apparently forgot the lyrics and began coughing halfway through.

Seeming to be suffering from his nerves, Scott regained his composure to sing the second-half of his song admirably.

Afterwards Simon Cowell, who gave Scott a guaranteed ticket to the semi-finals by using his Golden Buzzer, said the performance “fell apart” but urged viewers to vote for him nevertheless.

“I think you’re a really good singer and I hope people will vote for you on the strength of the second half,” Cowell said.

His fellow judges also praised and comforted an inconsolable Scott.

“Every performer and artist will be able to relate to what happened to you tonight. It happens,” Alesha Dixon said.

While Amanda Holden said: “Nerves just show that you care.”

“You’ve got a fantastic voice. There’s something very haunting when you sing,” remarked David Walliams.

Cowell was the only judge who didn’t stand up to applaud the singer.

Jules O'Dwyer and her dog Matisse won the competition, beating magician Jamie Raven and Welsh choir Cor Glanaethwy in the final three.

The duo will perform in this year’s Royal Variety Performance and take home a cash prize of £250,000.
