Eve Myles has defended Broadchurch series two, brushing off criticism “inevitable” after the rip-roaring success of the original.

The Welsh actress joined the ITV crime thriller as Claire Ripley this year and now has the nation gripped as one of the Sandbrook murder suspects.

But despite some papers branding the show’s return “Boredchurch”, Myles insists that she is “not really” disappointed by the underwhelming reaction.

“With something so successful, when it’s so heavily anticipated, you’re going to get people not enjoying it as much as the first series,” she told Radio Times.

“It’s a brilliant drama, but what gets highlighted is the negative stuff. At least people are talking about it!”

Myles added that she does not know how the storyline about Joe Miller’s trial resolves itself because she “wasn’t really ever in scenes with the Latimers”.

The cast were not allowed to watch the series in full before it aired, in an effort by producers to keep the plot tightly under wraps.

Myles did drop one potentially huge hint, however - that there might not be a killer at all.

“I know how it ends but not how they’ve cut it together,” Myles said. “I do know what happens to my character, because I’ve filmed my bit. Who says there’s a murderer!”
