Broadchurch season 3 finale: How the acclaimed ITV drama ended

ITV mystery drama Broadchurch has drawn to a close airing its final ever episode on Easter Monday (17 April).

While the final episode saw the revelation of who raped Trish Winterman (Julie Hesmondhalgh) - you can discover who the culprit was here - it was the show's final ever scene which left fans misty-eyed.

The scene saw detectives Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) and Alec Hardy (David Tennant) return to the beach where Danny Latimer's corpse was found back in the show's first season in 2013. Miller had even fished out her trademark orange coat for the occasion.

Reflecting upon the case they had just solved, Hardy states to his friend: “We did our job Miller. We got the people responsible that’s all we can do.”

Miller later invites Hardy for a drink (he turns her down) and asks him if he'll be sticking around in the seaside town - a question which he rebuffs with:: “See you tomorrow, Miller.”

“Fine. See you tomorrow,” she responds as the two part ways and the camera swoops towards the beach as the word 'Broadchurch' appears on the screen.

Fans expressed their upset over the show ending on social media.

With Broadchurch now complete, the show's creator Chris Chibnall is departing ITV for BBC where he'll replace Steven Moffat as the head writer of Doctor Who which, if the rumours are anything to go by, will see Kris Marshall replace Peter Capaldi for its next run.
