Chris Evans' appointment as the new Top Gear host has predictably been met with mixed reactions on Twitter from fans of the hit motoring show.
The Radio 2 DJ was revealed to be replacing Jeremy Clarkson in an official BBC statement last night, despite saying that he would "never run for office" after Clarkson was sacked following a "fracas" with a producer in March.
Soon after the news broke, Evans sent his "first tweet as new Top Gear host" confirming that he will not be leaving the Radio 2 Breakfast Show and agrees that "Jeremy, Richard and James are the greatest".
First tweet as new Top Gear host. I would like to say Jeremy, Richard & James are the greatest. And NO I'm not leaving the R2 Breakfast Show— Chris Evans (@achrisevans) June 16, 2015
But while the known car fanatic is "thrilled" to be taking up the prestigious role and has promised to "do everything [he] possibly can to respect what has gone before and take the show forward", not everyone seems confident that rebooting Top Gear with a fresh line-up is going to end well.
It is still unknown who, if anyone, will join Evans in the studio, after Clarkson's co-presenters Richard Hammond and James May both hinted that they would not be returning with a "surrogate Jeremy".
Well: best of luck to @achrisevans and the future of Top Gear (b. 1977). That's a ballsy call, frankly, and to be admired.— James May (@MrJamesMay) June 16, 2015
Here's what you had to say, from the critics...
Chris Evans replacing Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear is like replacing Leo Di Caprio in a Hollywood film with someone from Coronation Street.— Ian James (@Ijanderson977) June 17, 2015
Replacing Jeremy Clarkson with Chris Evans in #topgear is like replacing Dave Grohl with Kanye West. It's just not gonna work lads— Jack Bagnall (@jack_bagnall) June 17, 2015
Chris Evans will doubtless introduce Top Gear to a whole new audience. A much **smaller** one.— Steve Harman (@steve1215) June 17, 2015
What ever the producers of top gear are smoking must be good. Chris Evans? Really? What focus group put that twat at the top of the pile?— Vincentazz (@vincentazz) June 17, 2015
Can't wait to hear Chris Evans bang on about his kids and be all The One Show on Top Gear. No wait, I definitely can. Let it die already— Cat #ForzaJules (@catherinejebson) June 17, 2015
Chris Evans and Top Gear. Doomed. It will be killed by an over active ego. Can't wait for the house of cars on Netflix— 123db (@123db_GEEK) June 17, 2015
...to the supporters...
So Chris Evans to take over Top Gear. Brilliant choice same ego self opinionated shit, but no sexism or racism. Inspired choice— Cap'n Boabie (@iamboabie) June 17, 2015
As someone guiltily amused by Top Gear but unable to watch it due to its Clarksist tone, my heart is filled with joy. #ChrisEvans— John Bardsley (@bardsley84) June 17, 2015
I'm chuffed for Chris Evans. He genuinely loves what he does. He is open and funny. He deserves to take the lead on Top Gear. #vroom— Ash L Kennedy (@AshAlkofalyth) June 17, 2015
Evans celebrated his new job by playing famous driving songs on his radio show this morning and invited listened to call in with tips on what he should do to make Top Gear better.
