Dark: Creators of terrifying new Netflix series welcome Stranger Things comparisons

The new German-language drama will debut on the streaming service later this year

New Netflix drama Dark is poised to become the streaming service's next sleeper hit bolstered by its many comparisons Stranger Things.

Unlike Stranger Things, however, it seems as if this German-language series will be targeted squarely at adults - but that doesn't mean the creators aren't happy with the likeness.

Creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, who are set to premiere the series at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), told Deadline: “It’s really exciting because if all those people who watched Stranger Things will at least think about watching Dark, I think that’s a great opportunity for us. So keep comparing it.”

The mystery series follows four families caught up in the disappearance of the town's children. It was shot in suburban Berlin and will debut on the streaming service this winter, a few months after the October release date of Stranger Things season two, and has all the makings of being just as big.

Dark isn't the only TV series to have dropped at TIFF; new HBO series The Deuce - from The Wire creator David Simon - premiered ahead of its airing in the US this past weekend topping off a good few days for star James Franco whose new film The Disaster Artist received a 'historic' standing ovation.
