David Lynch remade Twin Peaks for a (presumably damn good) Japanese coffee company

When something registers as "odd" on the David Lynch-radius; rest assured, you're about to encounter an item of terrifyingly next-level surrealism. So what happens when you get Lynch to re-hash the Twin Peaks storyline for a series of 40-second Japanese TV commercials advertising canned coffee? This. This is what you get.


Essentially, the four ads re-tell the bare bones of the show's central Laura Palmer storyline; as Agent Dale Cooper tracks disparate clues on the trail of a missing girl, encountering the likes of the Log Lady and the infamous Black Lodge. Except here, Cooper enjoys a few breaks in the action to enjoy one particular brand of "damn good coffee": Georgia Coffee, or Japan's own famous coffee-in-a-can. 

Indeed, with a catchphrase like that, it was inevitable someone was going to come along and take advantage of Lynch's longtime love affair with the black stuff; with the director reportedly enjoying up to twenty cups of it a day.

And if you're wondering how a canned coffee company could attract such auteur power, Georgia Coffee actually stands as the main brand of Coca-Cola's Japanese subsidiary, outselling the soda by double. With each of the ads ending with one of Dale Cooper's trademarked thumbs-up; an official endorsement from cinema's foremost caffeine expert isn't something to be underplayed.

Though the search for this Laura Palmer-esque missing dame ends significantly less gruesomely, and more coffee-ad appropriate, these snippets of hyper-charged Lynch magic still tend to those flames of anticipation for the upcoming new series.

After a rocky pre-production stage (with Lynch dramatically leaving and re-returning to the Showtime-stabled production), the show's return has now been pushed back to a 2017 premiere.
