David Tennant says Labour looking ‘stronger’ under Keir Starmer: ‘We’ve got a clever grown-up in the room’

'Doctor Who' star previously appeared reluctant to personally support Jeremy Corbyn

David Tennant has expressed support for Labour leader Keir Starmer, calling him “a clever grown-up” that has made the party “stronger” since Jeremy Corbyn.

The Doctor Who actor is a longtime Labour supporter, but appeared reluctant to personally support Corbyn in recent years. He has now called the party’s widespread loss in last year’s general election “disappointingly predictable”.

Speaking to The Guardian, Tennant said Labour “are looking a lot stronger” under Starmer, adding: “We’ve got a clever grown-up in the room, which makes the other side look as ridiculous as they are. Let’s hope he can fulfil his early promise.”

Tennant also criticised the current Conservative government and their handling of both Brexit and the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s a very sad state of affairs,” he said. “Remember when there used to be clever people?

“When you look back on David Cameron and George W Bush with some kind of sentimentality, you think: ‘Jesus – how low have we plummeted, when they look like better options than what we’ve got currently?’”

Tennant will next be seen in the second series of the parenting comedy There She Goes, alongside Jessica Hynes.

He most recently starred in Staged, a scripted drama about life with his actor wife Georgia, which was written and filmed entirely in lockdown.
