The BBC has announced a new sister show to Doctor Who series 8 called Doctor Who Extra, which promises to be much "much more than a 'making of'" and will follow Peter Capaldi through every step of the creation of the Twelfth Doctor.

The 12-episode series will chart the sci-fi's "most ambitious run of episodes yet", making use of unparalleled access to stars including Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Samuel Anderson, executive producer Steven Moffat and each episode's directors.

"Packed with emotion, great stories and a real sense of ‘access all areas’, Doctor Who Extra is essential viewing for everyone who’s ever watched Doctor Who and wondered what it’s a like to be a part of the team that brings this global phenomena to our screens," the BBC said.

Each episode will be 10 minutes long and be available as soon as that week's Doctor Who episode has aired.

Doctor Who series 8 begins on Saturday with the premiere episode, 'Deep Breath'.

Ben Wheatley, Paul Murphy, Paul Wilmshurst and Rachel Talalay have helmed two episodes each this series, with Sheree Folkson directing one and Douglas Mackinnon, three.
