US thriller American Horror Story leads the Emmy Award nominations with 17, followed by Game of Thrones with 16, Behind the Candelabra and Saturday Night Live with 15, and Breaking Bad and 30 Rock with 13.

British talent has been recognised again this year, with Damian Lewis and Hugh Bonneville nominated in the best actor in a drama category for their roles in Homeland and Downton Abbey.

For the first time in the history of the awards, a TV series that has never been broadcast on television before has been nominated.

House of Cards, which was commissioned exclusively for Netflix, has been nominated for three awards including outstanding drama, best actor and best actress.

The latest series of Arrested Development, also commissioned for Netflix, has received one nomination for outstanding actor in a comedy.

HBO’s Behind the Candelabra, based on the life of pianist Liberace, pulled in 15 nominations. The single drama was originally made for TV after Hollywood bosses thought the film wouldn’t sell at the box office in America.
