Game of Thrones season 6 episode 3: Fate of Melisandre following Jon Snow's resurrection teased by actress

"I think what's going to happen is that they're going to say, 'Thank you' and now 'Goodbye.' We'll see."

Will Melisandre’s many crimes be redeemed in an act of martyrdom with Jon Snow’s resurrection? Game of Thrones actress Carice van Houten has hinted that it might.

*Potential episode 3 ‘Oathbreaker’ spoilers ahead*

The latest episode saw Melisandre perform some complex, albeit entirely unexplained, magic to save Jon, which could take its toll on her health (not to mention whatever is going on with her secretly being an old lady).

"She's not going to recover 100 percent, but she did a pretty big thing that people will be thankful for," Van Houten told People in the wake of the episode.

"On Twitter there were a lot of people [last season] that said, 'I want to kill you!' 'When are you going to die?' 'F*ck you, die bitch' and then at the end of episode 10, they were like, 'We'll forgive you if you save him!’”

She added ominously: “I think what's going to happen is that they're going to say, 'Thank you' and now 'Goodbye.' We'll see."

So will we really be saying ‘goodbye’ to The Red Woman?

5 things we learned in GoT S06E02

It’s unlikely that van Houten would have let slip her character dying - especially given the lengths Kit Harington went to in preserving his character’s secrets - more likely, she means ‘goodbye’ in a ‘they’ll be off my back’ sense.

Westerns owes Mel a huge debt in bringing the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch back to life, so she’ll probably be lower down the list of people to stab/poison/burn, at least for now.

Interestingly, Melisandre is absent in the trailer for episode 3, which gives a glimpse of the moments that follow Jon’s resurrection.

Many fans were disappointed in how quickly the scene was over with, though apparently it took a long time to shoot.

"We shot the sh*t out of it," van Houten said. "I've touched Kit's body, I've cleaned him I don't know, 55,000 times. To the point where I was like, 'Can he just wake up now?’”
