Grantchester star Robson Green: ‘We’re going to lose James Norton quickly’

Green said the talented actor is likely to get snapped up by bigger projects

Granchester may have started just two weeks ago but actor Robson Green has admitted that the show will not be able to hold onto their lead James Norton for a potential second series for long.

Speaking to The Independent, Green said, “Sadly, we’ll lose him very quickly, he’s so good. He really is one of the best I’ve ever worked with.”

The series is adapted from James Runcie’s novels and follows Norton’s vicar Sidney Chambers, who investigates crimes of passion in 1950s Cambridge with his partner Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, portrayed by Green.

ITV has not yet announced if it will be commissioned for a second series.

Norton shot to fame after playing the psychotic kidnapper Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley earlier this year.

The show was a hit with critics and audiences alike, and saw an average of 7.2 million viewers tuning in to watch the thriller unfold each week.

“I’d seen Happy Valley in which he was amazing in. […] You see that character there and he walks in and I meet him and I go ‘wow’. This beautiful, charismatic guy,” Green explained.

The 49-year-old actor says there was something of a bromance between the pair on set, “One night after wrap, we just went along the Cam and he just chatted about his time in Cambridge.

“I just love listening to him, it’s like the teacher I never had. So that was a joy.”

Granchester started on 6 October and the first episode has attracted an audience of 5.77 million, the six-part series continues on Monday.
