Great British Bake Off 2014: Iain Watters could return following Baked Alaska scandal
The contestant teased Newsnight viewers about a potential reappearance
If you thought the Great British Bake Off #bingate saga couldn’t possibly have any more twists and turns, you were wrong.
Following the Baked Alaska scandal that led to the elimination of Iain Watters, and then the news that fellow #freezergate contestant Diana Beard had to drop out of the competition due to illness, comes yet another revelation.
That’s right: Iain could be back.
The controversy caused a social media furore with Twitter users instigating hashtag campgins including #justiceforiain and #bringiainback.
But speaking on Newsnight last night, Iain teased viewers about a potential return in next week’s episode five of the pre-recorded show.
“You will have to watch next week,” he said.
Iain said: “I knew it was going to be quite a big thing as it was a big thing that happened on the show. The reaction has been crazy, there were a lot of comments on Twitter. It's been really nice support and really built up overnight.
"I was more frustrated and it was just the heat of the moment, In the last half hour of the show it got very tense. I've spoken to (Diana) and she's fine.”
Diana revealed yesterday that she left the show shortly before filming commenced for episode five, after a freak fall severed her olfactory nerve, robbing her of her sense of smell.
Earlier that day she had complained in a BBC interview that GBBO had been edited to make it look as though she sabotaged her rival's chances.
Diana said the announcement that she would not be returning for episode five had been brought forward by the BBC, following the furore of the most recent broadcasts.
