Here’s one the viewers chose earlier. The next presenter of Blue Peter will be selected by audience vote after competing in a new talent show, the BBC announced.

The CBBC duo Dick and Dom will host a search for the most suitable candidate to join Barney Harwood and Helen Skelton on the Blue Peter sofa.

Contenders to become the 36th presenter must win their way through a series of challenges to reach the final, where the winners will be chosen by the CBBC audience.

The BBC promised that the audience vote will be respected following a series of scandals involving viewer participation.

In 2007 the BBC apologised after staff ignored the results of a viewers’ poll to name the new Blue Peter cat, substituting Socks for the popular choice, Cookie.

Previously, the winner of a phone-in competition was rigged when a studio visitor pretended to call from an outside line.

It is the first time in Blue Peter’s 55-year history that viewers have been invited to choose a new host.

The CBBC series, which has a working title of So You Think You Can Be A Blue Peter Presenter?, starts this summer.

Applicants will face physical challenges to discover if they can perform the daredevil stunts expected from presenters, such as parachuting with an RAF display team. An ability to work with unpredictable animals will also be tested. Viewers will help choose fiendish challenges for the hopefuls.

Cheryl Taylor, CBBC controller, said: “Working on Blue Peter is a dream job for any aspiring presenter and our search for a new face to join Helen and Barney will generate a huge level of excitement for CBBC viewers. With the irrepressible Dick and Dom on hand to orchestrate proceedings we anticipate high tension and high jinks.”

In recent years the series, now screened exclusively on the CBBC digital channel, has been a launch-pad for star names such as Matt Baker, Konnie Huq and Anthea Turner.

Other figures who have been given their big breaks over the years have included Valerie Singleton, Janet Ellis, John Noakes and Peter Purves.

Potential Blue Peter presenters must email bppresentersearch@bbc.co.uk for details on how to apply.
