2016 may be lacking a new season of Homeland, but a brand new trailer has been released to whet fans' appetites.

The next installment of the US drama will focus on a female president-elect, continuing in the past few seasons' knack of echoing current affairs.

New York is the season's setting and it will pick up a matter of months after the climax of season 5, comprising the days between the election and president's inauguration.

The dramatic trailer shows Claire Danes' protagonist Carrie Mathison as well as supporting characters Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) and Dar Adal (F. Murray Abraham).

It's almost certain the trailer intended to shroud the fate of Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) in secrecy, although keen-eyed viewers believe he can be spotted at 0:24 - take a look for yourself.

Earlier this year, Showtime renewed the series for a further two seasons meaning Homeland will be on-air until 2019 at least.

The series debuted in the States in 2011 (it originally aired in the UK the following February) earning rave reviews for its depiction of Danes' CIA officer and Nicholas Brody (Damien Lewis), a U.S. marine she suspects is working for al-Quaeda.

Homeland season 6 will air in the US on 15 January with a UK release date expected to follow on Channel 4 soon after.
