ITV’s News at Ten is becoming ITV News at Ten Thirty as the channel pushes back the fact-based show for an entertainment programme described as a ‘cross between James Corden's Late, Late Show and Saturday Night Takeaway’.

According to The Mirror, the Tom Brady-hosted news broadcast will be pushed back for eight weeks as 40 of the celebrity-focussed half-hour shows trial on the channel. If a hit with viewers, ITV hopes to make the show a permanent feature.

An ITV spokesperson told The Independent: "We are looking at an entertainment show for the new year, more details will be confirmed in due course, including scheduling.

"There are occasions when the main bulletin moves for big entertainment event programming or sport. However, we have no plans to permanently move the news from the 10pm slot."

They reaffirmed that they are definitely looking to create an entertainment show for next year which will air for a limited run.

An insider told the Mirror that, instead of a fixed host like Corden’s show, rotating hosts will be booked “in the way that works so well for Have I Got News For You.”

Names on ITV’s wish-list include Jack Whitehall, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, Stephen Fry, David Walliams and Sarah Millican, as well as numerous actors and musicians.

The programme will reportedly have the slogan “Where the stars come out at night”, and act as an alternative to the BBC’s more popular Ten O’Clock News. Producers are hoping the show will produce viral online content like Corden’s Carpool Karaoke.

Currently, the ITV news bulletin brings in, on average, 1.8 million viewers compared to 4.2 million who watch the BBC’s. If the new format is a hit, the idea is for the entertainment show to be commissioned year-round; a decision the broadcasters will only make if ratings go up.

Meanwhile, ITV recently had the opportunity to bid against Channel 4 and the BBC for The Great British Bake Off, something they didn’t do as the presenters were not guaranteed to come with the show.
