Lorraine Newman, EastEnders executive producer, said of one of Walford’s best-loved couples: “Hopefully they’ll be getting back together. It’s a great love story, we’d be foolish not to.”

Shane Richie, who plays Alfie in the BBC One soap, hinted that writers were due to get his character back with Kat, played by Jessie Wallace, after the pair split when Kat’s affair with Derek Branning was revealed.

“I found out a little bit of what might be happening over the next few months. We’re in for a big ride between now and Christmas. Of course we’d love another 10 years of Kat and Alfie, there are genuinely exciting times ahead. I do miss working with Jessie,” Richie told The Mirror at the TV Bafta awards.

Wallace, who has been in the EastEnders cast on and off for 13 years, added: “I’d like it if they got back together because there’s a lot more there for them as a couple.”

Kat and Alfie will not be the first enduring EastEnders couple to be reunited on the soap.

Phil and Sharon Mitchell got back together last month after Phil told her: “Sharon, I love you. I do. I love you.” The two have been on and off since 1994, after the infamous ‘Sharongate’, when it was revealed that Phil had been having an affair with Sharon, then his brother Grant’s wife.

Bianca and Ricky Butcher remarried in February 2009 when Patsy Palmer, the actress who plays Bianca, returned to Albert Square. The couple first married in April 1997, with 22 million viewers tuning in to see their wedding.

Despite the soap’s recent success at the TV Baftas, EastEnders’ viewing figures have declined this year with Coronation Street regularly pulling in two million more viewers.
