Having revolutionised the TV series, Netflix is now setting its sights on the chat show, announcing one to be hosted Chelsea Handler that will "reimagine" the format for the on-demand generation.

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos told CNN Money: "The Internet has disrupted many of the conventions of traditional television and together with Chelsea Handler, Netflix is looking forward to reimagining the late night talk show for the on-demand generation, starting with the late night part…"

It's an interesting move, given how chat shows feel rooted in their 'late night' time slots and rely upon feeding the news cycle to maintain interest (think of the abundance of stories about Kimmel and Fallon skits/interviews you've seen recently), but then weren't we saying similar sorts of things about TV series before Netflix very successfully broke the rules with House of Cards?

This as yet untitled show must be the top secret "proper new exciting project" Handler previously gave as the reason why she would not be going after Craig Ferguson's The Late Late Show job.

Netflix has until now generally stuck with scripted shows like Orange Is The New Black (Ali Goldstein for Netflix)

The show is expected to arrive (in one go? Nightly? Weekly?) in early 2016, so Netflix has a while to figure out the finer points, confirming to CNN only that the show "will feature an updated format that still encompasses Chelsea’s unfiltered opinions on topical entertainment and cultural issues, as well as her signature guest interviews."

As Netflix users tuck into Orange Is The New Black season 2, the next big talking point on the streaming service will be BoJack Horseman, an original cartoon starring Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul and Arrested Development's Will Arnett.
