Piers Morgan uses example of kinder egg to argue against gun control

Piers Morgan has clashed with an American pro-gun campaigner in an on air row over the Las Vegas shooting which claimed at least 59 lives and wounded another 527.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, who has become famed for his anti-gun stance over the years, questioned why Kinder Surprise eggs were currently outlawed in America but guns were legal.

While the right to keep and bear arms is protected by the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, it is illegal to import kinder eggs to the US under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The act ultimately bans the sale of any piece of confectionary that has a “non-nutritive object” such as a toy or trinket in it and argues the items inside the eggs constitute a choking hazard.

After Morgan pulled out two of the hollow chocolate eggs while interviewing Dan Roberts, the discussion quickly descended into a fierce row. The pair became visibly heated and started shouting over each other.

The controversial columnist said: “Let me ask you a question. Here’s how this works. I ask the questions you answer them. I was in Las Vegas six weeks ago and I fancied buying a Kinder Surprise chocolate egg.”

Roberts, a member of the National Rifle Association, reacted by bursting into laughter but Morgan snapped back: "Don't laugh - it's not funny, 600 people got shot!"

Carnage was unleashed at an outdoor country music event in Vegas on Sunday night after Steven Paddock, a “lone wolf” armed with 23 weapons and two tripods, opened fire from a 32nd-floor hotel room.

The gun campaigner hit back at Morgan, saying: “No it is funny. Your example is ridiculous".

Despite Morgan explaining the eggs were illegal, Mr Roberts said: "That is absolutely false! These are exactly the kind of lies that I’m talking about. This is a lie Piers and you know it.”

The US Customs and Border Protection threatened a Manitoba resident with a 300 Canadian dollar fine for carrying one kinder egg across the US border into Minnesota back in 2011.

It was recently announced that a version of kinder eggs called Kinder Joy eggs will launch in the US in January 2018. These Ferrero eggs, originally launched in 2001, have two individually packaged halves. One contains a toy, and the other has chocolate cream, two crispy wafer balls and a small spoon to scoop it all up.

Morgan used his appearance on the show to say he was fearful for the future of America if nothing were to change in the wake of the country’s deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.

“It’s not complex at all, just get rid of guns,” said Morgan, adding that most people in the UK would be shocked if laws in the US did not change.

But Mr Roberts said he was “hopeful” nothing would change in relation to gun control in the wake of the tragic shooting.
