Rik Mayall dead: BBC Two to show classic ‘Bottom’ episode and ‘The Young Ones’ documentary in tribute to star
The BBC is honouring the comedian and actor who recently passed away
Saturday 14 June 2014
BBC Two will be showing an episode of Bottom in tribute to comedian Rik Mayall, who died earlier this week.
"Gas" will be broadcast tomorrow evening at 10.30pm followed by a repeat of the documentary Comedy Connections: The Young Ones.
"Gas" is the second episode of series 1 and first aired in 1991 on BBC Two. The episode sees Mayall’s Richie and his flatmate Eddie, played by Adrian Edmonson, nearly kill the gas man in an attempt to hide that they have been stealing from their neighbour’s gas supply.
The episode will be shown in place of a repeat of Stephen Fry’s QI.
Comedy Connections: The Young Ones is narrated by Julia Sawalha and explores the sitcom, which featured the comedy duo Mayall and Edmonson, along with Nigel Planer and Christopher Ryan.
Mayall died on the 9 June after going for a run earlier that day. His wife, Barbara Robbin, confirmed on Thursday that the comedian had suffered “an acute cardiac event”.
The actor and comedian was best known for his roles in Bottom and The Young Ones. Bottom ran for three series and featured the flat mates getting into scrapes. The show was characterised by its nihilistic brand of humour and cartoony, slapstick violence.
