Ruth Wilson answers question on whether she will be returning to Luther

Ruth Wilson has teased her long-awaited return to BBC series Luther.

The actor, who played fan favourite Alice Morgan in the drama's first three series, was spotted with co-star Idris Elba on set earlier this year confirming her appearance.

While the context surrounding her role remains a mystery, Wilson confirmed to The Independent that Alice's return will be more than just a one-episode cameo.

“She is in it,” she said during the promotion trail for new film Dark River. “It's not what you expect. She's definitely back for a bit. [Alice is] back with a vengeance.”

Production on the new series began in January following co-creator Neil Cross' announcement that Elba had signed up to return as the grizzled detective in four brand new episodes that are expected to drop early 2019.

Interest in a continuation of John Luther's story was sparked by both Elba and Cross who expressed a desire to maybe make a big-screen version following its overseas success - something that Cross states is “absolutely” still in the pipeline.

Dark River is the latest film from acclaimed British writer-director Clio Barnard (The Arbor, The Selfish Giant).
