New Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman has been feeling the wrath of 5 Seconds of Summer fans after introducing the Australian group as a “boyband sensation”.

The presenter, 42, welcomed Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Ashton Irwin and Calum Hood onto the launch show to perform their latest single “Amnesia”.

5 Seconds of Summer have amassed a dedicated fan base similar to that of One Direction, meaning anyone who criticises them should be afraid, very afraid.

“Let me slap Claudia Winkleman,” wrote one fuming fan, in capitals to emphasis her burning rage.

Others voiced frustration at how Winkleman could make such a disastrous genre error, particularly after she repeated it moments later, calling 5 Seconds of Summer “the boyband taking the world by storm” before they took to the stage.

“Claudia Winkleman just called 5SOS a boyband on Strictly and now I’m screaming punk pop rock at the TV,” one tweet read, while plenty more made use of the full dictionary of expletives.

Last night’s launch saw long-time Strictly presenter Sir Bruce Forsyth hand over the hosting baton to Winkleman after a flashmob tap dance.

The 15 new celebrities were introduced to their mentors for the series, while Smokey Robinson, Imelda May joined 5 Seconds of Summer as performers.

The show returns to TV screens in three weeks’ time for the first of the live dances on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 September.
