The Great British Bake Off: Batter Week reminds everyone just how devastated they are about Mel and Sue leaving

It's true - things will never be the same without such expertly-crafted pastry innuendos

We enter Batter Week on The Great British Bake Off with the heaviest of hearts.

With Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc stepping down as hosts of the programme following Channel 4's acquisition of the Love Productions show, every moment with them now feels like part of an extended fairwell; every pastry pun, every fondant innuendo.

THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF LIVE BLOG - BATTER WEEK, AS IT HAPPENS

The pair were such an integral part as to why the show became such a runaway success, and the most-watched programme of 2015; injecting the (admittedly rather dry) concept of a bunch of people baking things with a sugared middle of well-meaning humour and frothing delight. It's they who make the show feel like a sunny afternoon spent amongst dear old friends, and it's a wonder whether the show actually has much hope of survival without them, especially with rumours baking experts Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry are also considering dropping out.

This week's episode only provided further proof of their charm; between their opening sing-song and their wonderful pronunciation of, "overweeeeeeerked", to that blissfully crafted line, "There’s a pud in the hood and it smells good!"

Fans flocked to social media to express their love for the duo, and to emphasise what an irreperable loss to the show their departure will surely be; after an entire day of woe - and hilarious jokes - in reaction to what's been termed as the show's 'Breadxit'.

As we face the inevitable, together as a nation, rumours have already starting swirling as to who Mel and Sue's replacements will be - with suggestions from reasonable, to the downright ludicrous.

The Great British Bake Off airs on Wednesday nights at 8pm on BBC1.
