Fans of The X-Files have been given their first brief but tantalising look at Mulder and Scully in the new TV reboot of the hit sci-fi series.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are back in their popular roles as FBI agents investigating paranormal cases for a six-episode revival, due to air in the US on 24 January next year.

The brief footage teaser can be seen hidden at the end of a promo for Fox's 201 Days of The X-Files marathon, which kicked off on 7 July and is showing one old episode a day, in order so new viewers can catch up.

We see Mulder and Scully enter a dark room to investigate, looking nervous but awesome as ever, with guns pointed and flashlights glaring.

"I believe that what we're looking for is in the X-Files," Mulder says, in what is believed to be a voiceover from episode "Paper Clip". "I'm more certain than ever that the truth is there."

Scully replies: "I've heard the truth Mulder. Now what I want are the answers."

The original show launched in September 1993, amassing a global following over its nine season run and winning 16 Emmys and five Golden Globes.

Other actors rumoured to be returning for the hotly-awaited fresh episodes include Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner, William B Davis as Cigarette-Smoking Man and Annabeth Gish and Robert Patrick as agents Monica Reyes and John Doggett.

Joel McHale has been confirmed to play conservative news anchor Tad O'Malley, who becomes an unexpected alley for Mulder after he introduces him to an abducted alien called Sveta.
