An adulterous, pill-popping, tough-talking, packed-lunch-making mum-of-two with a fluctuating moral compass – Edie Falco has more than enough to get her teeth into as the eponymous lead in this tear-jerkingly funny comedy-drama set on a New York emergency ward.

Darker than Scrubs, less schmaltzy than Grey's and a heck of a lot less po-faced than ER, Nurse Jackie is brilliantly scripted and beautifully acted. If laughter's the best medicine, Nurse Jackie has the cure.
