IT began as a mere 700-mile, two-month trek over the Pyrenees, writes Andrew Green. Now it's getting serious. Thomas Ponsonby, the outgoing executive director of the British Association of Concert Agents, had decided to walk from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic (starting next week) as a refresher. Then a friend approached with the offer of pounds 10 per mile sponsorship, the proceeds to go to a charity of his choice.

Suitably encouraged, Ponsonby has thrown it open to further sponsorship and donations. His target is pounds 100,000, to be split between charities which stand as memorials respectively of a friend and a family member, both victims of meningitis. The Colin Keer Trust offers grants to young professional musicians who have completed full-time study but need further training. The Ralph Sutcliffe Fund for Meningitis Research funds the study of causes and treatment. Details: 95a Chancery Lane, WC2 (071-404 0076).
