ANOTHER tribute is being planned for George Butterworth, one of the great unfulfilled English talents: at 31 he suffered a direct hit from a shell during the Battle of the Somme. Richard Westwood- Brookes of Ludlow intends to erect a memorial in the former battlefield for the composer of A Shropshire Lad, made out of stone from Shropshire. He already has the site arranged, and hopes to hold a dedication ceremony on 1 July next year - the anniversary of the battle's start in 1916. His wish is for it eventually to become 'a memorial for all musicians who are killed in wars'.
