Those two words – "credit crunch" – have become the bywords for our times. They come up in conversation more frequently than the weather, and are held up as justification for a million different things. In reality, though, this peculiar phenomenon's effect on me – and on many my age and in similar circumstances to me – has been limited.

Well, I didn't need to worry about getting better. As I write I'm still just as bunged up and ill as I was a week ago. Of course, my holiday has been miserable as a result – but at least it's been cheap.

I'm not sure I've ever had a response quite like that which I received to last week's column. Hey, if I'd known that cycling was such a hot topic I would have written about it earlier.
