The first footballer to score a competitive goal at the new Wembley Stadium has died suddenly, aged 27, the Football League said yesterday. Mitchell Cole had been forced to retire as a professional player in 2011 due to a heart condition which left him with an irregular thickness of the heart. Cole, who was married to the sister of England international Joe Cole, scored for Stevenage against Kidderminster at Wembley in the 2007 FA Trophy Final. He said last year he would be risking death if he were to play again.

Controversial plans to merge two of Britain’s most distinguished scientific institutions may be abandoned following a public outcry. Government proposals to merge the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), look set to be scrapped this week The Independent on Sunday has learned. The cost-cutting measure was strongly criticised by top British and international scientists and was first revealed in this newspaper in April this year.

Rescue teams called off their search for a British woman who was believed to have fallen overboard from a cruise ship in the Mediterranean last night after finding a body. The woman, thought to be in her 70s, was reported missing from the P&O cruise ship Aurora as it sailed from the Portuguese city of Oporto to Barcelona on Friday.
