Captured stare wins wildlife photo prize

Two primates sit lost in thought - the gorilla is a captive in Miami Metrozoo in Florida, the boy a visitor. The gorilla seems resigned; the boy awestruck.

Last night this memorable image by the German photographer Gerhard Schulz won him Wildlife Photographer of the Year. His was one of more than 20,500 entries in this prestigious competition, jointly organised by the Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife magazine.

Nick Oliver, from Suffolk, was joint winner in the Animal Behaviour (Birds) category with Barn Owl - a vole's eye view. All 109 winners can be seen at an exhibition which opens at the Natural History Museum tomorrow.
