A new live-action movie about environmental superhero Captain Planet could be heading for the big screen, it was announced on July 19.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers, often shortened to just Captain Planet, was originally an animated American TV series which ran from 1990 until 1992.

The environmentally-minded series tells the story of Gaia, the spirit of the Earth, who distributes five rings around the globe, originally Africa, North America, South America, the Soviet Union and Asia.

Each ring grants the wearer, known as a "Planeteer ," control over one of the natural elements, such as wind, water and earth. Captain Planet, head of the Planeteers, is a superhuman being who brings together all of the Planeteers' powers.

Using their powers and with the help of Captain Planet, the group is sent to Gaia to battle against the worst environmental outrages around the world.

On July 19 the Cartoon Network announced that it had signed an agreement to develop a live-action motion picture based on the cartoon series in partnership with Don Murphy, Susan Montford and their company Angry Filmwork . Don Murphy is perhaps best known for his role in helping produce the Transformers franchise.

Details as to when production of Captain Planet will begin were not available at the time of writing.

Other environmentally-focused cartoon series include Gisele and the Green Team, which features an animated version of supermodel and UN Goodwill ambassador Gisele Bündchen who battles environmental crime with her team of eco-friendly superhuman super models.
