Tara was founded in 1973 to campaign against child labour and promote skilled local artisans by providing advance payments and long-term contracts. A large amount of jewellery that ends up in shops in the West has been put together by young children working for over 12 hour shifts. Tara only employs adults and has established 16 schools and training centres for children from poor families, which over 700 child labourers have so far attended.
