The aluminium frame on the 20in-wheeled Attache makes it reasonably light (11.9kg) and the bag rack sits usefully high up on the bike, so you needn't crash your heels on your luggage.
DAHON SPEED D7: This 20-in wheeler has seven
gears and although it's not as light
as some (12.3kg) it won’t weigh
you down excessively. Kevlar
puncture protection in the tyres
helps keep you cycling on even
the toughest surfaces.
MEZZO D10: The D10 folds up to a
relatively tiny size
because its 16in
smaller than the
20in norm and
as it has 10 gears
so it's faster than
too. £975, mezzobikes.com
RIDGEBACK RENDEZVOUS: A great, basic folder with a
solid-feeling, if slightly heavy,
12.5 kg steel frame and 20 inch
wheels. A comfortable rider.
DAHON MUSL MAGNESIUM: Stunningly light (8.3kg) and with a
great, comfortable riding position,
the MuSL performs spectacularly
and is quick to fold, plus easy
to carry. It uses high-end
components to make it both light
and strong and has nine speeds.
CARRERA TRANSPORT: Highly affordable, sturdily
built and with a decent luggage
rack, the Carrera is a great
BROMPTON S2L: Once you've tried one of the nippy
Bromptons you may never go
back. The smaller, 16in wheels
give a compact fold and the
mechanism is sublimely effective.
BROMPTON P6R-X: The X in the model name
indicates that the front forks and
seat frame are made from
super-strong titanium, reducing
weight but adding to the price.
Comes with extra handgrips to
allow you to duck under the wind.
GIANT HALFWAY 1: The Halfway aims to be half way
between a fold-up and a
full-size machine and has a handy
quick-release hinge mechanism
and monofork (the frame
attaches to one side of the wheel
only, so it folds flatter).
MOBIKY GENIUS: The Mobiky has the smallest
wheels here (12in) so the fold is
especially small. It's not so
comfortable for longer rides but
is good for short commutes.
Weighs in at 13.5kg.
