International Plastic Quilt Project now seeking square-makers

Now through March 15, the International Plastic Quilt Project is accepting applications for "square-makers" to contribute to a quilt made entirely from plastic waste. US-based organization Leave No Plastic Behind created the project to increase awareness of the environmental harm caused by single-use plastic products.

Each participant is asked to make a 12-inch quilt square; all square-makers are also invited, but not required, to partake in a three-month plastic-free challenge and to organize exhibits of the final quilt in local communities.

Based in Portland, Oregon, Leave No Plastic Behind calls itself an environmental art group, aiming to encourage the reduction and reuse - creative or otherwise - of plastic waste.

A US-only plastic quilt project accepted submissions from August through mid-October 2009; the resulting squares have been shown at cafés and galleries. Fifty artists have so far taken part, and in growing the project to an international level, the group hopes to quadruple that number in 2010.

Applications music be sent in by March 15, followed by artwork details and artist statement by May 24. Exhibitions will begin in June.
