New posters available for supporters of World Environment Day

Posters showing support for global event World Environment Day have been made available online, announced the United Nations Environment Programme via Twitter and Facebook.

World Environment Day (WED), held annually on June 5, is an international event for positive environmental action around the globe.

The event was created by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1972 and is used by the UN as a vehicle to stimulate environmental awareness and political attention. In 2011 WED will be hosted in India and is themed around woodland conservation with the title Forests: Nature at Your Service.  

On May 9 UNEP announced via their Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/unep.org) and twitter ( @UNEPandYou) pages the availability of a series of downloadable posters via their official site ( www.unep.org/wed).

The three available posters show natural scenes, waterfalls, mangoes on a tree and livestock walking through a forest, with captions pertaining to environmental issues - "water supply," "snack bar" and "carbon capture and storage." The posters are available to download via http://bit.ly/mmuUBw.

In addition to showing support for the event by downloading these posters, individuals wishing to take part in WED can find a event near where they live by visiting the WED map of activities around the world via http://bit.ly/ktfi7I.

Earlier in the year, individuals, businesses and governments around the world supported positive environmental actions and helped raise awareness of climate change through international events - Earth Hour (March 26) and Earth Day (April 22). Though both these events have now passed, information about the associated ongoing campaigns and next year's events can be found via the official websites at www.earthhour.org and www.earthday.org.
