Gata Kamsky had to work to draw the 11th game of the Fide world championship match against Anatoly Karpov in Elista, but he finally saved himself with accurate endgame play after the adjournment. Karpov now leads 7-4 with nine games left to play.

After a series of exciting games over the past two weeks, Karpov adopted a quiet strategy in the latest encounter, settling for a nagging advantage that allowed him to indulge in his favourite manouvring style.

From move 20, it was clear that his plan had to involve an advance of his c-pawn, but he left it until move 38 when it gave him an annoying pull in a queen and rook endgame.

The game was adjourned on Wednesday night with opinion divided on whether or not Karpov would be able to squeeze out a win. On resumption yesterday, however, Kamsky showed good technique by giving up a pawn to activate his rook and steer the game to a safe draw. Here are the full moves, Karpov playing White, Kamsky Black.
