1. Benefit Under My Spell Noelle

This glamorous, exotic perfume has notes of cardamom, black pepper, wild orchid, jasmine petals, patchouli, black amber and raspberry. But because the vanilla notes come out strongest, it’s a great fragrance for winter, and it works for daytime and evenings.

£29.50 for 30ml, harveynichols.com

2. Vivienne Westwood Mon Boudoir

More of a subtle and sensual fragrance than a statement scent, this needs to settle for a few moments once it’s sprayed so that the pear and mandarin get a chance to balance out the lily of the valley and white musk. The result is delicate and beautifully feminine.

£38 for 30ml, houseoffraser.co.uk

3. Dolce & Gabbana Intense

This sexy, oriental floral fragrance could not be more aptly named. With top notes of neroli and raspberry, heart notes of orange blossom and tuberose and base notes of sandalwood, this is the one to wear if you have a hot date lined up.

£44.50 for 25ml, thefragranceshop.co.uk

4. Tom Ford London

This rich, woody scent is highly  seductive and a real head-turner. It’s not kind on the purse strings, but it’s got an unforgettable wow factor and it’s as season appropriate as it gets, with the heady scent making you feel all warm inside. Be warned – your friends will definitely want to borrow it.

£140 for 50ml,  tomford.com  (available in store only)

5. Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede Cologne

Just as you’d expect from Jo Malone, this is rich, sumptuous and luxurious, but it doesn’t dominate like some  winter perfumes do. Rather, it  manages to create the perfect balance between fresh and floral and elegant and feminine.

£39 for 30ml, jomalone.co.uk

6. Joop! Miss Wild

With key notes of spicy pink berry, black vanilla and rum, you won’t be surprised to hear that this is pretty sweet, but in a young and vibrant way rather than being sickly. It comes in a handbag friendly bottle, too.

£30 for 30ml boots.com

7. Cocoa Juvenate Repose from Hotel Chocolat

A scent inspired by cocoa groves in St Lucia might not sound like the ideal origins for a woman’s fragrance. But the result is a warm, empowering and lavish bouquet of spiced white florals with just a hint of roasted cocoa on a base of musk, sandalwood and leather.

£45 for 50ml, hotelchocolat.com

8. L’Occitane Ambre & Santal

If florals are too feminine for you, this woody scent could well be up your street. With a base of sandalwood, cedar and amber, it has top notes of rosemary, citric bergamot and fig leaves and the result is mysterious, exciting and wonderfully edgy.

£49 for 75ml, uk.loccitane.com

9. Elizabeth Arden Untold

This fresh (and surprisingly youthful for Elizabeth Arden) scent strikes a great balance between floral and musky and is a fabulous one to wear every  day. It’s the brainchild of Clement  Gavvary, who has developed fragrances for Prada, Giorgio Armani and Tom Ford.

£34.50 for 30ml, theperfumeshop.com

10. 1707 OR

Made in Grasse by Micallef exclusively for Fortnum’s and named in honour of their inaugural year, this brand new fragrance is intense. opulent and  feminine, with notes of rose and oud on a base of vanilla and amber. It doesn’t come cheap, but it is really very special.
