Somehow, the summer sales have started and distinctly autumnal shades are dropping in shops before we’ve thought about our holidays. But we still want to buy brights; zingy citrus shades, hot pinks and azure blues. So, we reckon accessories are the way to go. There are still plenty of stand-out colours in current collections if you know where to look. Here, we’ve rounded up the best clutches on the high street as well as pieces by independent designers to bring you a collection of holiday-ready bags ideal for sultry evenings, preferably with a cocktail in hand.
1. Willow Reversible Bag: £39, Coast
The zingy orange on this bag certainly fits our brights brief, but you can actually cleverly style this envelope clutch two ways. Either have the bright flap to the front, or flipped over so the bag becomes a predominantly neutral number. Either way, there’s a zip up compartment and a hand strap so you can keep hold of it on the dance floor. No prizes for guessing which way we’ll be wearing it this summer.
2. Skinnydip Leopard Print Clutch: £25, Topshop
We love a bit of leopard and this purple and glittery black take on the classic print is a fun way to wear it. By the London-based accessories brand known for its playful ranges – think novelty shapes, slogan-adorned pieces and kitsch, summer-inspired prints – this little metal and plastic box clutch will fit your phone, a coin purse and bits of make-up. The detachable slim chain means you can go hands-free if you need to.
3. Faded Denim Clutch: £220, Meli Melo
Meli Melo’s London-designed, Italian-made bags are elegant but with a bit of an edge. The brand has collaborated with stylist-to-the-stars Kris Zero (she counts the likes of Kate Bosworth and Shailene Woodley as clients) to create a three-bag clutch collection. All of them nail that laid-back cool look that they’re so good at over in LA. Our pick is this python-print on denim. The colours aren’t as in-your-face as some others on this list, but the azure blue and purple contrasts with the white leather on the back, and makes this one feel just-right for sun downers in Ibiza. There’s a detachable leather wrist loop so you don’t lose it, but no internal pockets.
4. Jaquard Tassel Clutch: £65, & Other Stories
This large, deep pink number with a fold-over flap holds more than the average clutch, including a pair of flats for when heels get too much. The metallic embroidery and leather tassel give it a luxe feel. Inside, you get a zip pocket for your valuables.
5. Cleobella Sunset Embroidered Clutch Bag: £88, Asos
Cleobella’s bags are hand-made in Bali using traditional techniques and locally-sourced textiles. This one is crafted from textured cotton in bright colours that make us think of exotic holidays. There are leather trims and it zips up to keep everything where it should be. With a nod to this season’s love affair with embellishments, you get a cascading tassel as a zip-pull.
6. Bubble Perry Chain Clutch: £75, Whistles
This is the colour of the sun in our imagination. And we think it looks particularly good on this slim leather clutch that you can also wear as a cross-body bag – just unclip the chain to change-up the style. Little details make Whistles’ accessories a cut above many high street options: chunky hardware and quality leather, for two here.
7. Bobby Fold Clutch: £175, Sarah Baily
We love the contrast of the fuchsia and gold on this fold-over clutch by British designer Sarah Baily. The super-bright pony makes it a fun, statement piece. That and the attention to detail, like the vibrant floral and fern-print lining and the gold-plated zip, ensure this will make you stand out at a summer soiree. All the collection’s handmade in London and this one comes in a silver version.
8. Pom Pom Clutch Bag: £25, East
Wicker pom poms and summer go very well together, particularly in these bright blue hues. Inside there’s room for your phone and purse.
9. Anna Alexander: £55, Wolf & Badger
We haven’t seen bags that embody the spirit of summer more than Anna Alexander’s cool clutches. Choose from lemons, oranges, cherries or bananas, all on colour-popping backgrounds. Inside there’s a large zipped compartment and two useful pockets for phone and make-up. These are big enough to fit a tablet, so could double-up as a case, but we’d prefer to use it as a statement clutch.
10. Epommy Clutch Bag: £60, Dune
We told you pom poms are big news this season, and here the emphasis is on big. The fold-over flap is held in place with a magnetic button, there’s a zip pocket inside and a really handy pocket for your mobile phone. But who are we kidding? The giant pom pom’s the star of the show here. Choose from four colours, including this rich royal blue and zesty yellow. There’s also a detachable strap.
Sarah Baily’s clutch is an attention-grabber and we love the fact it’s British designed and made. Our pick from the high street is Coast’s reversible orange number that you can style two ways.
