As Autumn approaches and the hours of sunshine shrink away, sadly we blondes can’t just rely on the sun to lighten our locks anymore — no matter how much lemon we squeeze on and many of us will be looking to our old friend Mr Bleach for a helping hand. Whether yours is natural and just a bit frazzled from all that sun or highlighted or dyed and needing some TLC to prolong your colour or counteract brassy tones, we’ve been testing products that bring out the best in fair hair. Here’s what we found.

John Frieda has an excellent selection for coloured hair and its range for blondes never disappoints; hair feels soft, bright and frizz-free after one wash. You can often buy the products on offer so they're not too expensive for everyday use.

This is the official product of London Fashion Week so, with all the preening that goes into styling hair for the occasion, it makes sense that this range does it all. Hair feels soft and smooth, plus it really brings out the best of blonde — ideal prep for a night out.

3. Tigi Bed Head Dumb Blonde Purple Toning Shampoo: £15.95, lookfantastic.com

Highlighted hair can easily become a bit brassy, so to combat the yellow tones this violet toning shampoo strips unwanted hues. Just a small amount leaves the colour looking like it’s been freshly highlighted.

4. L'Oréal Elvive Highlights Conditioner: £3.99, boots.com

A lot of products specifically for highlighted hair come with a high price tag and it can all add up if you have long, dry hair and need a lot of conditioner, but this is great value and leaves hair feeling really soft and manageable.

5. Moroccanoil Restorative Hair Mask: £31.85, feelunique.com

Though not specifically made for highlighted hair, this mask is perfect for some serious nourishment for dry hair that has been damaged by styling or colouring. It can leave your locks ever so slightly heavier than normal, so we’d recommend it for Sunday or pampering night use.

6. RedKen Blonde Idol Custom-Tone Conditioner Violet For Cool Blondes: £12.11, feelunique.com

At first this product seems a little more complicated than most, as there’s a twist cap to increase the levels of toner for your hair. But once used, it’s really easy — simply start at week one and work your way up if you need more toner before your next highlights trip. It really stops those unwelcome brassy tones beaming through.

7. Batiste Dry Shampoo Light Blonde: £3.99, boots.com

For an instant brightening effect, this handy dry shampoo adds a hint of colour, as well as freshening dirty hair (a must-have for festivals). It’s great if you want to add volume for styling, too, or even to help cover up dark roots.

8. L'Kerabelle Serum: £13, dnlhair.co.uk

Just a small amount on the hair after washing leaves it smooth, shiny and much easier to brush. As it’s oily, apply it to lengths and ends, skipping roots, to avoid greasiness. The little 50ml bottle lasts for ages.

9. Pureology Perfect 4 Platinum Miracle Filler Treatment: £14.37, feelunique.com

If you style or straighten your hair regularly, it’ll be prone to split ends and will need some extra care. Spray this onto hair after washing to strengthen the hair and leave it feeling really soft with a lovely scent, too.

Verdict:

For good value and guaranteed results, the well-established John Frieda range is consistently excellent. Tigi Bed Head Dumb Blonde Purple Toning Shampoo is ideal for when you want your tresses freshened up colour-wise, particularly if it’s looking dull and brassy and it’s not quite time for a trip to the hairdressers yet. And for a bargain product, L'Kerabelle Serum was a surprise find and is great to de-tangle and de-frizz.
