As the nights get longer and invariably colder, the idea of cosying up in your PJs becomes all the more inviting. But let’s face it, who doesn’t love throwing on their jim-jams as soon as they get through the front door?
Bedtime can’t come early enough for many of us but if you thought nightwear was all about tatty sweats then think again. These days you can be just as stylish by night as you are by day. Heck, people are even wearing their jammies on the streets they look so good.
While your favourite novelty pair might get a few stares on the high street, the recent trend of luxurious sleepwear has seen a rise in fancy silk two-pieces that can be worn out the house. But, if thermal favourites are more your thing don’t fret because cosy bedtime winners will never go out of style.
When it comes to fabric choice there are plenty of options and it really depends on what you’re looking for from your nightwear. Cotton is lightweight and soft to the touch but it’s not the best insulator; if you prefer something more breathable this is the best option for you. If you want a set that’s going to keep you warm all night long then opt for cashmere, wool or fleece. A happy medium can be found in silk as it’s a thermoregulator, meaning it will keep you warm when you’re cold and cool when you’re hot.
From snuggly sleepwear to lavish loungewear, we’ve found the best PJs on offer that promise to keep you snug and looking seriously stylish at bedtime.
1. Desmond & Dempsey Sansindo Tiger Print Long Luxury Cotton Pyjama Set: £130, Desmond & Dempsey
Desmond & Desmpey really is a family affair. Created by two friends, Molly from Australia and Joel from England, the pair bonded over their love of shirts and Sunday adventures; their PJs are even hand painted by Joel’s brother Christian. Channel the glamour of the Twenties with this pair of classic pyjamas, inspired by those worn by French fashion designer Coco Chanel. Traditional in design, these are the most luxurious jammies on our list, so while they might sit at the higher end of the price scale, they’re worth investing in. Crafted from 100 per cent luxury cotton, the white backdrop is decorated with a hand-painted, olive-green Sansindo tiger print. The Sansindo is a regular feature in many Korean folk paintings and is otherwise known as the Mountain Spirit or Guardian. We love the idea that while they’re traditional, the modern motif gives them an edgy and seriously stylish finish. Details include a classy notched (fold over) collar and mother of pearl buttons, while handy pockets complement the tailored fit. Of course, while they’re made to flatter, they’re also pretty roomy. And for an extra £30 these luxe jammies can be monogrammed with two characters.
2. Matalan Get Your Stripes Alder Hey Pyjamas: £10, Matalan
If novelty jammies are more your thing then this merry pair should be your go-to. Not only are they seriously comfortable but 100 per cent of the profits go to charity. For this year’s “Get Your Stripes” campaign, Matalan is donating to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital by bringing the whole family a set of candy cane-striped cotton PJs. That’s right, there’s a pair for you, the man in your life, children, babies and even pet dogs. They’re ideal for Christmas with red and green stripes, long sleeves complete with elbow patches and a practical red chest pocket that will leave you feeling snug and suitably festive.
3. Jigsaw Penelope Stripe Jersey Pyjama: £59, Jigsaw
This sleepwear set is right up there as one of the comfiest we’ve come across. New this season, these PJs come in a matching printed pouch, making them ideal for weekends away or as a gift - it’s a nice touch that makes them feel really special. Made from 95 per cent cotton, they're seriously soft and the light grey pattern, with fine white horizontal striping, gives you a classic look. The top has long sleeves with a wide boat neckline and is a loose, boxy fit. If you hate figure-hugging jammies then these are a great choice. The bottoms taper at the hem with a cuff but the stretchy fabric means they don’t cling to your legs. Each pair is available in sizes small (10), medium (12) and large(14). We also love the attention to detail with the addition of a chic velvet drawstring tie.
4. Victoria’s Secret The Afterhours Satin Pajama in Pink Stripe: £65.46, Victoria’s Secret
For most of us, owning a pair of these is the closest we’ll ever get to becoming a Victoria’s Secret Angel, but do you know what? It’s totally fine because these luxurious jammies more than make up for it. Available in 10 different designs, from a jazzy diamond print to plain black, our favourite has to be the classic pink stripe which, while super feminine, is toughened up with a shirt collar and black contrast piping. The material, despite being made from imported polyester, is silky-soft, feels breathable on your skin and fits loosely; great for those who can’t stand clingy jim-jams. The detailing is exquisite too, from the aforementioned piping, which lines the cuffs and button front, to the VS embroidery on the shirt’s chest pocket. The bottoms are also fitted with a handy drawstring and they come in a great size range; XS equates to a size 0 while XL should fit a size 16.
5. Topshop Striped Pyjama Shirt and Trousers: £46, Topshop
Recreate that classic, borrowed-from-the-boys look with this oversized stripy set from high street favourite Topshop. While the idea of wearing a shirt in bed might not sound particularly comfortable, this set is made from 100 per cent cotton, meaning it’s super soft and breathable. The shirt is oversized with a relaxed, boxy fit and comes with turned up sleeves and a reverse striped chest pocket. We also love the fact that the top can be worn on its own in the warmer months. For now though, we think it’s best teamed up with Topshop’s matching straight-leg, loose-fitting bottoms, which feature a handy tie waistband.
6. Missguided Ribbed Slouch Loungewear Onesie: £22, Missguided
While onesies aren’t considered the most stylish of garments, they’re definitely one of the most comfortable. Thanks to Missguided though, fashion meets function with this luxe pink all-in-one that not only looks good but fits like a dream. First of all, the colour is super-pretty and the kind of blushing pink that’s girlish without being too over the top. With mid-length sleeves, a loose fitted top and tapered cuff bottoms, this is a super comfy fit. The dropped waist also features a silky bow tie, adding a touch of femininity and a little shape to this otherwise laidback look.
7. B by Ted Baker Navy Floral Pyjamas: Top £21, Bottoms £24, Debenhams
This navy set from Ted Baker combines high-quality design with comfort. If you like your nightwear to be feminine but not draped in baby pink, then this is a great alternative. Available in navy blue, the top and bottoms are made from lightweight jersey, meaning they’re extremely comfy to wear and banish any worries about being see-through. The feminine yet quirky floral design covers a chiffon front panel on the top and a portion of the bottom’s waistband. We also love the fact that the long sleeve top slightly flares at the back, giving you extra room and a relaxed, comfy fit.
8. Next Green Floral Button Through Pyjamas: £32, Next
The nights might be getting gloomier but that doesn’t mean your sleepwear has to too. Instead, opt for a bright pair that will lift your cold weather blues. We love this multi-tone floral pair from Next, covered in autumnal blooms in assorted shades of green. If you like the look of classic, tailored PJs but find them a little too restricting, then this could be the pair for you. While they appear to be fitted, the shirt is cut wide and boxy, and is longer at the back. The bottoms follow suit too, with full length, wide cut legs that come in both regular and long lengths.
9. M&S Pure Cashmere Pyjama Set: £248, M&S
If it’s extreme luxury and comfort you’re after then investing in this cashmere set from Marks and Spencer won’t disappoint. Made as part of the brand’s on going collaboration with model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, they’re made from 100 per cent cashmere and are ideal for those who like their PJs warm, cosy and seriously plush. The top has a high roll neck, ribbed long sleeves and is slightly longer at the back for ultimate comfort. The bottoms fit with a straight, loose leg and sit securely on the natural waist, where they’re tied with an elegant, silky bow tie. Available in two colours, champagne and black, what’s impressive with this set is their extensive size range, which runs from a size six to 22. And they’re also machine washable.
The Verdict: Women's pyjamas
This is a tough one but if you’ve got the cash to splash on a new set of jammies we recommend Desmond & Dempsey. The quality of material is luxurious and soft without feeling too stuffy and we love the unique hand-painted design. For something a little more budget friendly but equally good, head to Jigsaw and pick up its super-soft, stripy set. If you’re looking to add a little luxury to your bedtime routine though, Victoria’s Secret’s slinky pair will leave you feeling seriously indulged, without breaking the bank.
