Whether you opt for a classic standing rack, a heated version or one that goes on the wall or the ceiling, make sure you dry your washing safely.

Below is our edit of the best racks and devices. To minimise a build up of allergy-aggravating house dust mites or mould spores increased by damp clothing,  Allergy UK recommends drying washing in a space closed off from the rest of the house, like a covered porch or garage. Or, if drying in another room, keep windows open and the door closed.

If you’re after a heated rail this bargain buy is currently half price. Not as much capacity as the Lakeland alternative (11m to their 21m) but it can hold up to 10kg of wet washing. It folds away nicely, too.

2. JML Dri-Buddy: £60, Amazon

A sturdy, heated drier that Lakeland promises can be run for less than 5p per hour.  21m of drying space or just fold out half for smaller loads. Not a quick fix for heavier garments, but our tester dried jeans in just over half the time of a normal, fold-up airer.

7. JVL Wooden Folding Clothes Airer: £16, Amazon

More compact, with 5m of hanging space, this is a traditional, well-made option. The untreated wood won’t stain clothes and there are two height settings. Good if it’s to be a pretty-much permanent feature in your laundry room as it doesn’t fold as flat as some others.
