No one wants their dirty laundry on display. Keep it locked down with our pick of the best baskets bins, boxes and hampers to stash your smalls. Our testers tried a selection for a few weeks to see which made the washday blues a little easier to bear.

1. Songmics Laundry Trolley: £19.95, amazon.co.uk

Do you need four sections for your laundry? Well, after whites, darks and colours, use the extra bin for hand-wash, bedlinen  or “what the hell is that?”. You may extra need room to house it because it is nearly a metre wide, but it’s utility-chic at its best – and for a great price.

2. Fusion Laundry Hamper: £75, johnlewis.com

The strong bamboo frame on this hamper folds flat, while the triple-sectioned bag is made of grey canvas and attaches with  velcro straps. Our tester liked three sections as it made laundry sorting a whole lot easier to sift through.

This is a perfect choice if space is at a premium. You can jam it in a corner and, although it’s only 32cm wide, it is 58cm high so is plenty big enough. Testers liked the hinged lid and the fact that it has a matching range of bathroom storage solutions.

A compact basket, this one stands 44cm high and is made from palm leaves. The tan, leather-look handles are a nice contrast to the navy basket weave which makes a refreshing change to the usual bland bathroom colours.

8. Vertbaudet Washing Machine Storage Unit: £18, vertbaudet.co.uk

Teach your children where to put laundry with Vertbaudet’s washing machine-style hamper. In coral, green, blueor purple, the clear window unfastens for them to “load the machine”. Our tester’s children enjoyed it so much that a few clean clothes found their way in, too.

9. Minky Coloured Stripe Laundry Hamper: £18, very.co.uk

This sturdy, fold-flat box is covered in cheerful fabric and has a Velcro fastening. Minky has a royal warrant so if it’s good enough for Her Majesty then we’re on board with that. Rope carry handles were useful and we liked themulti-coloured stripes.

10. Monk’s Bench-Style Laundry Box: £27.99, argos.com

If you could do with a chair in the bathroom, this handy hinged box doubles up as a seat. It’s not huge, so don’t expect to cram a family’s weekly wash in there – but for a handy place to throw dirty towels, it’s perfect.

Verdict: The Brabantia is a proper bit of kit– it’s guaranteed for ten years, but for our money the smaller Aztec basket from Tesco is the most stylish addition to your bathroom or utility purely because it looks so different and is at a great price.
