With Mother’s Day fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about what to treat your mum to on 26 March. If you’re stuck for ideas, and on a budget, then we’ve got just the thing to help.
Everything on our list – from superfood-infused liqueur to out-of-the-ordinary interiors – will cost you no more than £20. And if you have got a bit more to spend, check out our list of the best Mother’s Day gifts under £50.
1. Grasi Slate Heart Memo Board: £18.95, Not On The High Street
This versatile gift comes courtesy of Grasi, a family-run firm specialising in products made from Welsh slate. The heart-shaped board can be hung either outside or in, and is ideal for jotting down reminders for the rest of the family, keeping a to-do list, or simply writing a pleasant message on. It has a jute rope attached to the top, meaning it can be easily hung. You can get it personalised (35 characters across three lines), although this will cost you an extra £7.
2. Hobbycraft Medium Sewing Box Polka Dot: £18, Hobbycraft
If your mum is thinking about hopping on board with the ever-growing sewing trend, she’ll need a box to keep all her bits and bobs together. And we think this polka dot-patterned one, from the make-it-yourself specialist Hobbycraft, will do nicely. It has four plastic compartments for all the smaller items she needs, with a big open space underneath for all the rest. It fastens securely and has a handle for carrying around. (And if she’s still after the sewing machine itself, get her to check out our round-up of the best models for beginners.
3. Black+Blum T-Loop Tealight Holder: £19.90, Red Candy
We’re particularly fond of Black+Blum’s distinctive designs, and that’s especially so with this quirky tea-light holder. The way it twists and holds itself almost makes it seem as if the whole thing is floating. Ideal for the mum who prefers her interiors to stray from the ordinary, we reckon these chrome-plated steel holders would work well paired together. Includes two tea-lights.
4. Neom Organics Real Luxury Travel Candle: £16, Selfridges
Why should luxury fragrance be confined to the home? If your mum has a trip away planned soon, or if she just loves to travel, then treat her to one of these travel candles. Its compact sizes means it’s certainly luggage-friendly, and it’ll provide her with a burn time of around 20 hours. The scent is relaxing – just what you need on holiday – with a woody, floral aroma.
5. Fair Goji Liqueur, 22%: £15.95 for 35cl, 31DOVER
We featured Fair, the French independent spirit producer, in our round-up of the best fair trade food and drinks products. That was for its quinoa vodka, and this Fairtrade-certified spirit uses another of the so-called superfoods: goji berries, sourced from the Himalayas. It’s certainly something for the mum with adventurous tastes, with a flavour that seems to blend a whole host of berries and fruits. Great for experimenting with cocktails.
6. We Love Kaoru Indigo Mug: £18 each, Luna and Curious
We’ve been fans of We Love Kaoru’s ceramics for a while now. If you want to treat your mum to a special mug, then this is a good one. The five designs in a striking indigo blue are inspired by Japanese kimono patterns. They’re made in England from fine bone china and can go in the dishwasher when she’s finished her morning cuppa.
7. Katie Loxton Star Keyring: £14.99, Katie Loxton
If your mum is, like ours, an absolute star, then this from the London-based accessories designer Katie Loxton is very appropriate (you might be familiar with the brand’s gorgeous zipped pouches already). She can either use it to keep all her keys in one place, or as a bag charm. This one says “sparkle” in the centre, but there’s a range of shapes and phrases in the collection.
8. Rosie For Autograph Jersey Pyjama Top: £20, Marks and Spencer
Rosie Huntington Whiteley's collection for M&S feels and looks luxurious, particularly the nightwear. We think mums of any age will love this vintage-inspired top that will keep her cool for springtime sleeping. The pretty pale pink will go with lots of PJ trousers, but if you have a bit more to spend, get the bottoms to go with it. Comes in sizes 6-22.
9. Lily O’Brien’s Chocolate Desserts Collection: £6, Sainsbury’s
When we did our taste testing to find the best Mother’s Day chocolates, this selection from the Irish chocolatier came out on top. There’s a great range to be found among the 18 chocolates inside the box – from compotes to caramels – and our writer reckoned they were sure to be “after-dinner winners”. Sounds good to us.
10. Briers Strawberry Thief Garden Bag: £12.99, Leekes
Buying for a green-fingered mum? This bag was one of the picks in our round-up of the best gardening gifts for Mother’s Day and, as we wrote there, “it’s meant for stowing tools, but this handsome, bucket-shaped tote bag would look equally at home on a trip to the shops”. There’s plenty of storage and it’s durable.
The Verdict: Mother’s Day gifts under £20
We really like the Grasi memo board – it’s both a pleasant decoration and something she’ll actually get some use out of. Pretty much every mum likes a cuppa too, which means we also recommend the mug from We Love Kaoru.
